When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer?

There is a particular kind of anticipation that comes with preparing for a baby.

There are names to consider, tiny clothes to fold, rooms to prepare, and a future that is still difficult to picture. Somewhere in the middle of all that preparation, you may begin thinking about photographs—not simply because you want beautiful images of your new baby, but because you know this beginning will pass before you have fully had the chance to take it in.

If newborn photography is something you know you want, the best time to begin looking for a photographer is during your pregnancy.

When Should You Reserve Your Newborn Session?

I recommend reaching out sometime during your second trimester.

Babies, have their own ideas about when they will arrive, so newborn sessions are reserved according to due date rather than scheduled for an exact day in advance. Reserving your session during pregnancy simply allows us to hold space around your baby's arrival and finalize the details once they are here.

Why Plan Ahead?

Trust me, in the first few weeks after giving birth, you aren't going to feel like trying to find a photographer whose style you like with availability. The newborn weeks are often a blur—beautiful, exhausting, emotional, and unlike anything else. Having your session reserved beforehand means that documenting this chapter is already taken care of.

The photographs you make during your baby's first days eventually become part of the visual history of your family. Years from now, you may look beyond the tiny hands and new features and see details you didn't notice at the time like the way your oldest looked at their new sibling.

What If My Baby Is Already Here?

It's still worth reaching out. Not every family begins thinking about newborn photographs during pregnancy. Sometimes the desire to document this season doesn't arrive until your baby does.

If your baby is already here, contact me as soon as possible to ask about availability. While the earliest days offer something uniquely fleeting to photograph, there is no deadline for documenting your family's story.
